Southern Copper Corporation

Southern Copper

Southern Copper Corporation is a fully integrated copper producer with open-pit mines, concentrators, smelters and SX-EW refineries in Peru and Mexico, incorporated in 1952 and headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. It employs 16,510 people, trades on the NYSE at 208.01 USD per share with a Lima listing since 1996, and carries a market value of 170.38 USD bn. FY2025 consolidated output was 954.27 kt of copper, 31.15 kt of molybdenum, 24,188 koz of silver and 134.1 kt of zinc. That volume produced revenue of 13.42 USD bn, operating income of 7.005 USD bn and net income of 4.335 USD bn on total assets of 21.381 USD bn and equity of 11.105 USD bn. Revenue divides as 77.2% copper at 10.36 USD bn, 11.4% molybdenum at 1.53 USD bn, 6.8% silver at 0.91 USD bn and 4.6% zinc at 0.62 USD bn. The group sells at spot with no commodity derivatives on the book. Cash cost was 0.58 USD/lb on a by-product basis in 2025 and 0.01 USD/lb across the first nine months of 2026, a figure that places the company in the lowest decile of the global copper cost curve. Copper reserves of 44.8 Mt contained at 0.36% support a 47-year mine life, the largest reserve base in the industry.

Strengths: Cost leadership is not marginal but structural. At 0.58 USD/lb net of by-products in 2025 and 0.01 USD/lb in the first nine months of 2026, the company can absorb a copper price far below 4.82 USD/lb, the realised figure for 2025, and still generate cash. Scale in reserves underwrites that: 44.8 Mt of contained copper at 0.36% and a 47-year life means no annual scramble to replace ounces, and the long life supports planning horizons that shorter-reserve peers cannot match. The asset set is concentrated in four large open pits, Buenavista del Cobre at 520 kt, Toquepala at 260 kt, Cuajone at 170 kt and La Caridad at 135 kt, each with its own concentrator, and La Caridad adds a smelter and refinery that capture the full chain from rock to cathode. Integration matters for by-products as well: molybdenum at 11.4% of revenue, 1.53 USD bn at 22.01 USD/lb, silver at 6.8% and 0.91 USD bn at 39.99 USD/oz, and zinc at 4.6% and 0.62 USD bn from the five IMMSA underground mines, which produced 120 kt. Each of those credits lowers the net copper cost, so the by-product mix is not a sideshow but the mechanism behind the headline figure. Pricing is clean across every metal: realised values matched COMEX, LME and Metals Week references with no measurable discount.

Weaknesses: One shareholder dominates the register. Grupo Mexico holds 88.9% through Americas Mining Corporation, which leaves a thin free float, limits the influence of minority holders on capital allocation and dividends, and creates related-party exposure that a widely held peer does not carry. Volume is also heading the wrong way in the near term: FY2026 guidance is 918 kt of mined copper against 954.27 kt delivered in 2025, a step down rather than a step up. Capital spending is accelerating into that decline, at 1.32 USD bn for FY2025 and 1.38 USD bn across the first nine months of 2026, up 52.9% year on year, so more money is going out while less metal comes out. The cost advantage itself is levered to by-products: a 0.58 USD/lb net figure depends on molybdenum at 22.01 USD/lb and silver at 39.99 USD/oz holding up, and a weak moly market would lift the net copper cost quickly. Reserve grade of 0.36% is low, which makes the economics a throughput and energy story rather than a grade story. Both operating countries, Peru and Mexico, carry social licence and permitting variables that can slow a project regardless of engineering quality, and the company's footprint sits entirely in those two jurisdictions.

Industry Position

Southern Copper is the largest copper-focused producer covered here and one of the largest in the world, with 954.27 kt of consolidated copper in 2025, revenue of 13.42 USD bn and a market value of 170.38 USD bn. It competes with Freeport-McMoRan, Codelco, BHP, Antofagasta and Glencore, and its reserve position is the strongest of that set at 44.8 Mt of contained copper.

The company is unusual in shape. It is incorporated in the United States and headquartered in Phoenix, but every operating asset sits in Peru or Mexico: Toquepala, Cuajone and the Ilo smelter and refinery in Peru, Buenavista del Cobre, La Caridad and five underground poly-metallic mines in Mexico. Exploration reaches Argentina, Chile and Ecuador, but production does not yet.

That footprint supports a 47-year reserve life at 0.36% copper, which is the longest horizon in the peer group by a wide margin. For a business where a new mine takes a decade to permit and build, a reserve measured in decades rather than years changes the strategic question from replacement to sequencing.

Competitive Advantages

Cost is the core advantage, and it is extreme. Net cash cost was 0.58 USD/lb in 2025 and 0.01 USD/lb in the first nine months of 2026, against a realised copper price of 4.82 USD/lb in 2025. A spread that wide does not depend on a favourable quarter; it survives a severe price decline and still funds operations.

The mechanism is by-products. Molybdenum contributed 1.53 USD bn at 11.4% of revenue and 22.01 USD/lb, silver 0.91 USD bn at 6.8% and 39.99 USD/oz, and zinc 0.62 USD bn at 4.6% from 120 kt at the IMMSA mines. Copper itself was 10.36 USD bn, or 77.2%. Those credits are what convert an ordinary 0.36% orebody into a first-decile cost position.

Integration reinforces it. La Caridad runs a concentrator, SX-EW plant, smelter and refinery in one complex, and Buenavista combines two copper concentrators, a zinc concentrator and SX-EW capacity. Smelting and refining in-house means treatment and refining charges are a cost of the group rather than a margin conceded to a third party, and pricing realisation is clean across all four metals, at COMEX, LME and Metals Week references with no discount.

Strategic Expansion

Capital is flowing into the existing pits rather than into new jurisdictions. FY2025 investment totalled 1.32 USD bn and the first nine months of 2026 reached 1.38 USD bn, up 52.9% year on year, which is a step change in the pace of spending for a company that had been running a steadier programme.

The asset base gives that spending somewhere to go. Buenavista at 520 kt is the largest single contributor and already hosts multiple concentrators and SX-EW plants, Toquepala at 260 kt and Cuajone at 170 kt are established Peruvian pits with leach and concentrator capacity, and La Caridad at 135 kt is the integrated complex. Brownfield expansion at operating sites is faster and cheaper to permit than greenfield work.

Beyond the two producing countries, exploration covers Peru, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Ecuador, and the Lima listing since 1996 gives Peruvian investors direct access. Nothing in the disclosure suggests a near-term new mine outside the current footprint, so growth will come from debottlenecking and from the reserve base rather than from geography.

Risks & Outlook

Control is the structural risk. Grupo Mexico holds 88.9% through Americas Mining Corporation, leaving a narrow float in a 170.38 USD bn company. Minority holders have little influence over capital allocation, dividend policy or related-party transactions, and the valuation has historically reflected that discount rather than the reserve quality alone.

Volume and spending are moving in opposite directions. FY2026 copper guidance of 918 kt is below the 954.27 kt mined in 2025, while capital investment rose 52.9% year on year to 1.38 USD bn in the first nine months of 2026. If the additional spend does not restore volume, the cost advantage will be carrying a heavier fixed base.

The cost figure also depends on markets the company does not control. A 0.58 USD/lb net cost at molybdenum 22.01 USD/lb and silver 39.99 USD/oz would rise if either credit weakened, and zinc from a 120 kt stream is a smaller cushion. Copper at 77.2% of revenue means there is no hedge if the red metal falls, and no commodity derivatives were in place in FY2025.

Finally, both operating countries carry social licence and permitting friction that no engineering solution addresses. Outlook: a low-cost, long-life copper franchise with clean pricing and an unusually concentrated shareholder register. The profile closes with a VerityRank Score of 89/100.
